When it comes to tick-borne illnesses, a philosophy of increasing education & awareness is good. A history is even better. Over the past twelve years, Mainely Ticks has been a leader in promoting education & awareness of tick-borne illnesses to residents of Southern Maine and beyond. We’ve conducted numerous seminars and workshops through community based forums, adult education programs, home & flower shows, wellness and physician conferences and through the distribution of over 62,000 free tick identification-tick removal guides, bookmarks and educational brochures.

Wednesday, May 4. Join the Maine IPM Council for A Homeowner’s Guide to Managing Ticks.

Have you ever felt the skin-crawling sensation of a freshly discovered
tick? These tiny arachnids havefor many of usbecome a
pervasive part of Maine summers. Regional expert, Dr. Thomas Mather has
dedicated his career at the University of Rhode Island Center for
Vector-Borne Disease to the research of tick exposure and Lyme disease
prevention. On May 4th, Dr. Mather will speak about the best science-based
methods for tick exposure prevention.

Updates on the state of Lyme disease and tick monitoring in Maine will be
provided by Sara Robinson, Epidemiologist with the Maine Center for Disease
Control and Chuck Lubelczyk, Entomologist with Maine Medical Center
Research Institute.

Maine CDC Health Corps will be present to answer questions on Lyme disease.

Presentations will include Barb Maurais from Mainely Ticks on personal
protection and landscape strategies, a presentation by Dr. Megan May, M.S.,
Ph.D., Chair, Div G, American Society for Microbiology on why it is so hard
to develop reliable tests, the launch of “The Big Five for Lyme”, a
fundraising event to raise money for ILADS’ Physician Training Program, and
a presentation by Dr. Leon Hecht, ND, who has been through the ILADS EF
Physician Training program.

There will be other Lyme support groups to meet, information to share,
raffles, prizes and much more. Jimmy the Greek will offer a breakfast
buffet for $7.99. Come meet others, receive information, network and come
together for Lyme Disease. Special m-cee Sharon Rose Vaznis of WCSH6 will
keep the information flowing!

This is NOT a 5K event, this is solely an information event. The 5K will be

Sunday, May 1. Massachusetts. Governor Deval Patrick has
notified the Sturbridge Lyme Awareness of Massachusetts
(S.L.A.M.) of his intent to sign a Proclamtion declaring the month of May
as “Lyme Disease Awareness Month” in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts!
This May will be the first official “Lyme disease awareness month” ever in
Massachusetts. S.L.A.M is planning a May 1st event where
the Governor will read the proclamation and kick off the month with a
family fun/awareness event at the Sturbridge Town Common! Mainely Ticks
will will conduct two educational sessions and distribute educational

A seminar and open house on the prevention and treatment of Lyme, EEE and
West Nile diseases on Saturday, March 25, 2006 from 2pm to 6pm at Wells
High School, Route 109, Wells, Maine. Snow date is Saturday, April 1, 2006.
Six guest speakers and more than a dozen exhibitors will present a wide
spectrum of information to the community on protection, prevention and
treatment of these diseases.

Did you know that:

  • There were 237 cases of Lyme disease reported in the state of Maine in
    2005. According to the CDC, studies suggest that Lyme cases may be
    underreported by 5 to 10 fold. You could have Lyme and not even know
    it.
  • Just one mosquito bite can transmit West Nile virus or other diseases.
  • Education is the key in controlling EEE disease, but people still
    ignore proper precautions.

Learn what you can do to reduce your risk of contracting these diseases.

Bob Maurais from Mainely Ticks will open the speaker series at 2:15pm.
