Baxter State Park

Boasting an incredible 209,644 acres of wilderness, Baxter State Park offers over 200 miles of trails and 40 peaks and ridges, with fishing, kayaking, and picnicking on the beaches. In 1931, former Governor of Maine Percival P. Baxter, after whom the park was named, formally donated the land to the State of Maine with the condition that it be kept forever wild. Over 150,000 acres of the park are managed as a wildlife sanctuary, with more than 52,000 acres being open to hunting and trapping, with the exception of moose. Roughly 60,000 people visit in the summer months. For more information, visit Baxter State Park’s website here.

Bradbury Mountain State Park

One of the original five state parks and located 20 miles north of Portland, Bradbury Mountain State Park welcomes visitors year-round to view its foliage and explore its 800 acres of forested land and trails. Bradbury Mountain is the park’s greatest natural feature. Sculpted by a glacier, visitors are encouraged to climb the mountain and watch the hawks and eagles ride the thermals before migrating for the winter. Bring your dog or your horse!
